The truth is, most of the things you feel inspired to achieve – most of the fitness goals you want to attain in 2017 – are OUT OF YOUR REACH.
This is not a bash on setting high standards or a mockery of your dream to make 2017 better than 2016. It’s simply a wake-up call:
- Without proper planning – our goals are destined for failure – that is, having the goal will provide nothing to ensure success in 2017.
- Your current skillsets and environment are probably not at the level needed to achieve your goal – otherwise you would have already achieved it or are WELL on your way to achieving it
Setting the goal is only as effective as the GOAL PLANNING – so here is the good news – plan effectively, and your outlook on success changes dramatically. So how do we plan our fitness goals effectively?SMART or DUMB goals?
Many people like SMART goals – you’ve probably seen these: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-framed.
The problem with this is that these lack inspiration, instruction, and what is “Attainable – realistic” to begin with? Attainable has nothing to do with your success – attainable is not what inspired Edison to create the light bulb – if attainable has a problem, it’s that you are not ready to commit and do what is necessary to achieve it. In fact, SMART goals are actually a good way of determining the best METHOD – more on that later!
High performance coach Brendon Burchard has developed a method of goal attainment that is Dream-oriented, Uplifting, Method-based and Behavior-driven. A simpler process that takes you through every element of success and taps into your highest human potential. (I’ve created a Free Workshop that takes you through this process which you can access by entering your Email below)DREAM
That takes us to the first step – start with the hope and DREAM. Get what it is you are ACTUALLY trying to achieve – Go WAY beyond a list or a singular goal like “lose 20 lbs”, that are unattached from your heart’s desire. If we are not tapped into the Why Behind the Why, we will fall back into the norm of our life. We need to have a tangible, visible, tastable vision of what we want in our life in order to realize and accept each day that we are here to REACH our desires. There are behaviors that allow us to tap into the Dream that is the originating source of our goal.UPLIFT
Once we are clear with the Dream and we are openly accepting that our purpose is to one day wake up and have it be real, we need to define and tap into emotion – that which UPLIFTS us. If motivation has ever been a struggle in attaining your goals, this is where you need to benefit. In my experience, when people say they lack motivation, it is not that they are simply lacking any desire to move forward in their life. It’s my observation that “feeling unmotivated” is actually a result of negative emotions – fears, whether it be fear of failure, fear of rejection, or a lack of faith that what they are doing is going to give the result they are looking for. The Uplift is all about lifting these burdens and tapping into the light, driven and powerful emotions that we are very capable of generating.
As a bonus, the Uplift allows us to enjoy the journey, and I guarantee putting this into the your plan and your practice will improve your sense of joy and satisfaction in life apart from the fulfillment that comes from being successful.METHOD
Once we have defined the Dream we are pursuing and actively prepared to fuel what drives us on the journey, we need to be sure that the METHOD we are using are going to get us there. A great method will be Specific in its principles, Measurable in that progress is tracked, Attainable in that you are capable of the tasks that need to be done that day – i.e. perform a squat – if you don’t know how, then your task is to learn to do squats – great methods are Realistic in that you can make progress EACH AND EVERY DAY no matter what happens, and Time framed means you create the necessary range of time (sometimes more, sometimes less, but always a defined range) to achieve at least the MINIMUM EFFECTIVE DOSE that will guarantee that you are moving forward. If this sounds familiar, you’ve guessed it – Method is guided by the SMART principle. But great methods are not only Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-framed. They are also highly EFFECTIVE. Effectiveness means, that you are doing the right thing, the right way. If on can do the minimum effective amount each day, then success is guaranteed. We want success faster than that, so everything we do on top of that is because we are motivated to do so.BEHAVIOR
This then naturally leads us to the best BEHAVIOR. Behavior is the force of trigger and response that in turn creates habit. This is why we must leverage both positive and negative habit to chisel our goals into form. Negative habits are really just opportunities to make a great impact by changing the behavior. When done properly and in an Uplifted state that is connected to your Dream, pain of changing pet habits is overpowered by the FEELING that you are one day closer to making your Dream your reality. With a little bit of coaching, positive triggers can create new habits that are incredibly impactful to your progress.
Whether you work with a personal trainer, run with a group, lift with a buddy or just go solo, it’s the choices you make that will determine your success. The best choices also set up the next round of choices, which is why the first choice that determines your success is your goal planning. So did you take notes or did you just skim this article? Did you set aside a 20 minute goal-planning session or did you squeeze this into your work day to satisfy your mental itch for what might possibly be better health in 2017?
